History of Burlington
Before pioneer settlement, Burlington was covered in forest and home to various First Nations people. In 1792, John Graves Simcoe the first lieutenant governor of Upper Canada named the western end of Lake Ontario ‘Burlington Bay.” People started referring to the land as Burlington soon after. After the war of 1812 farmers prospered on the land. They started shipping the produce from their farms out from the busy docks of Port Nelson and Wellington Square. The transportation by water of the goods harvested such as fruit, lumber and wheat were ideal. Supported by a compatible climate and waterfront location. Farming was the main industry until later after the second World War, when electricity from Niagara Falls was cheap and drew people to settle in Burlington making it into a city.
