Midhurst
The history of Midhurst can be traced back to the early 1800’s. The development of this community was contributed to by its close proximity to Willow Creek. The Creek was a source of power for the early settlers and enabled them to operate grist and saw mills. In case you are wondering, “Grist” is grain that either has been or is intended to be ground. These mills were constructed in 1825, with a further four mills, a distillery, soap factory and two hydro-plants being established later.
Midhurst, was a village previously known as Oliver’s Mills, after the owner of the first built saw mill. However, in 1864 a George Smith from Midhurst in the County of Sussex England, became the first village Clerk-Treasurer, Justice of the Peace and Treasurer! In honour of himself and the original 16 settlers, all from Midhurst in Sussex, renamed the village, which has carried its name to this day.
Midhurst community
Midhurst has a population of about 3000, this community is the largest in Springwater township. It nestles in an area surrounded by 70 plus years old pine trees, but is only a short drive to the local Bayfield Street shopping area, known as the “Golden Mile.” This is a region where it is easy to be aware of the potential that exists for new development.
You are made aware of the character of this community, the pride and friendly attitudes that are made obvious. The old country store, church and community centre are historic features as are the rushing waters of Willow Creek. You become more aware of the community foundations as you observe plaques and Cairns at the sides of the road, which denote a historical event, or the site of a previous historic building.
This is a community where a quality lifestyle prevails. It is similar to taking a step back from the issues and pressure of a fast-paced city life and readjusting to a small community with a significant future potential.
